As I have posted earlier in this thread, I have the personal cricut, and two jukeboxes as well as the DS software. My friend was raving about her gypsy the other day on the phone and I am starting to wonder if I should have gotten that instead of the DS since they do basically the same thing. That way I wouldn't have to carry my laptop, and the jukeboxes with me when I travel to crop. SO, lay it on me. Is it really that great and since I have the other stuff should I just stick with it?

If what you have is working for you - and especially if you don't have the extra money - I'd say stay with what you have.

The Gypsy is going cheap right now, though, so it is a good time to buy.

Just remember, you HAVE to link your carts to the Gypsy in order to cut with it - and they CANNOT be unlinked.

So keep that in mind.

However, another option is to get the Gypsy and design with it, then transfer your designs to the DS and cut them out there.

You would still have the stuff to lug around, but you wouldn't have to get them out unless you needed to cut.

I have one and love it - I have not linked all my carts to it though, because I am wanting them to develop the way to unlink the carts. I don't plan to ever sell my carts, but I want that option there.

Wait, so if I get a gypsy and link my cartridges to it then I can't use them with the DS unless I connect the gypsy to the DS to cut from there?

Where are the gypsy's going cheap? I have only seen them for around 300.

I appreciate your help!

Earlier today Creative Xpress had them for about $112, and I think free shipping. They don't use paypal, so you'll need cc info. You may be able to find them cheaper on ebay or somewhere else online. Just search around for a good price. $100 is a good price to pay. They were recently somewhere of $89. HTH

You can still use your carts with DS if you've linked them to your Gypsy.

You can also still use your carts directly in the Cricut.

Linking them to your Gypsy just means that you can't link them to ANOTHER gypsy. They are forever tied to THAT Gypsy. (Unless the Gypsy breaks... then PC will re-serialise your new Gypsy so you can link your carts to it..... but that's whole 'nother story.....)

I asked this same question before I bought my gypsy. I was worried by all the prob. people have when they first get one. But after seeing the prices on ebay i thought I would give it a try. It does take a long time to set it up when you first get it. But its very easy. Its a matter of doing it when you will be at home for a while. It took hours to update but I just went about my day and checked on it every once in a while.
I got mine as a packaged deal on ebay, it came with a sleeve, extra stylus, and a car charger for 110.00. With free shipping.
I main reason I bought mine is for crops. I dont like to bring all my stuff with me. I will do a layout then design the cuts I want in gypsy then cut them when I get home. If you want your pages complete at the crop you will still need to bring your cricut but not the jukebox, and carts.
Hope this helps.

BUY a gypsy! BigGrin Yes, I'm for the gypsy! I LOVE mine. When I bought my expression I thought, there is no need for me to have a gypsy, but then I saw everything it could do, and I fell in love. I design solely on my gypsy. I haven't put a cartridge in my cricut since the day I got my G. I grab my gypsy and go to crops or friends houses, and can just hook my G to their machine and cut away. I don't need to lug cartridges, etc. So VERY nice! I have had zero issue with linking cartridges and so forth!

I wasn't sure about getting one either but now that I have one - I LOVE it... I scrapbook with my sister on the weekends and it nice to have all my carts without having to carry them around.
It took me a while to get use to some of functions but that's because I was too lazy to read the manual... There are a tons of great videos on youtube that helped me.

I was like you but had lots of carts.... too didn't want to carry everything to crops.. then M's had the Gypsy for $49 and now I am the proud owner with all my carts on it.... my mom scraps too, but doesn't use her cricut very much... she let me load all her carts so now I have them even if she doesn't bring them... YIPEE..... it is the best thing ever... took some getting used to but several of us bought them in our cropping group and we have been exchanging tips...... definitely shop for the best price

I wouldn't buy a Gypsy. Cricut is going to be offering a really neat feature via the internet and cricut.com that does the same functions as the Gypsy and the Design studio and you can use the Imagine cartridges. I would wait until that came out and this new thing called the Cricut Craft Room is free :D

I hadn't heard about that. I don't know that it would have changed my mind on the gypsy though. I was thinking of all the long car trips that we take where I could be working on designs. When we go visit family it is a minimum 12 hour drive. But that is good news that they are coming out with the Craft Room. When is it supposed to be operational?

That cracked me up, my mom's nickname is Lucy (her real name is Carolyn). I'll have to think of a name for mine. My daughter usually names things for us, but the cricut stuff is ALL MINE. So, I get to name it. I don't share well. heh

Hey Regina,

Get you a Gypsy! Prices right now are unbelievably low, $49-$98. You just have to look. Try Oh My Crafts. I think they have a bundle that's pretty low.

From what I understand - and I'll admit I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer - the new software will be web based. Seems to me you'll need either a gypsy or computer. I'd rather tote the gypsy. HTH
