Mounted usually come on (some times with) wooden blocks. Unmounted are just the rubber part of the stamp. You can either mount it yourself to a permanent block or they have sticky sheets that you can purchase. I have one acrylic block that I put the sticky sheet on and then I use all my unmounted stamps with it (like you would a cling type stamp).
